There are so many posts and so-called gurus on attraction marketing but I think they are missing the fundamental principle of what makes people attractive. The second law, I believe, is very applicable for social entrepreneurs because it gives us the principle to help us position our social entrepreneurship to be more sustainable and have the greatest impact.
In my post, The Go-Giver Law 1: The Law Of Compensation, I used the example from my business intentionally rather than from the Charities and Not-for-Profit Organisations I have been involved with. As social entrepreneurs, you most likely “give more in value than you take in payment” as part of a way of life. Social Entrepreneurs tend to be givers instinctively and have a strong sense of social responsibility, empathy and compassion. It is these three traits that move us into action to see change but it is the next law that will help us bring change on a bigger scale and be financially rewarded in the process.

As social entrepreneurs, we need to use business strategies to develop our social entrepreneurship and make it more sustainable, but with so many books and articles on success it can be very overwhelming! The problem is that a lot of them focus on getting rather than giving so we must ensure that we find principles that align with our values and empower us to develop a successful social entrepreneurship within a framework of serving and giving.
We have all heard someone being described as a “go-getter.” It conjures up the thought of a successful and determined person who will stop at nothing to get to the top. The only way we are going to develop and grow as social entrepreneurs is to break out of our comfort zones. This involves pushing our limits and doing things that we normally would not do or are not normally in our ability to do. We may have high and lofty ideals to change the world but unless we are ready to push past the anxiety and fear into moving into the unknown, we will have little success as social entrepreneurs. What makes people want to follow a leader?
Becoming a social entrepreneur requires more than a deep desire to see change and challenge the status quo, it also requires strong leadership. As leaders we must be able to inspire, guide and develop others in order to run a successful social entrepreneurship.
There is significant evidence to indicate that leadership can affect the success or failure of an organisation, particularly for small to medium organisations. So it is important that we continually look for ways we can grow and learn. Leadership skills and techniques can be learned, very few people are natural leaders. Social Entrepreneurs need to question the status-quo and be the agents for change in the world, but change is not always easy. Often as social entrepreneurs, we can focus on the change we want to see in the world but I think the first place we need to start is the change we want to see in ourselves. “You must be the change you want to see in the world” Mahatma Gandhi. As we learn to be more introspective and make the necessary changes in our lives, it will give us the skills and abilities to bring change to the world.
Most people know the changes in their life that would make the most difference but often these changes sit on their ‘to do’ list. Almost all change requires us to give and take. My #1 piece of advice for social entrepreneurs (or anyone for that matter) is don’t let your tank run on empty.
I remember many years ago, not long after I started driving, running out of petrol in my car. My car came to a stop, late at night, only 200 metres from a service station. The problem was, I had ignored the warning signals for too long. It was a hard lesson to learn but I have never run out of petrol again!
Did you know that our emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual tanks can get empty too? If you are a social entrepreneur or someone who gives out to others, you may find you get little warning signs that your tank is getting empty because you are pouring out to others from your tank. The Great Funding Dilemma For A Social Entrepreneur
Many Social Entrepreneurs start off with innovative solutions but are unable to see their ideas come into fruition due to the lack of start-up funding. Funding is without a doubt the biggest challenge facing social entrepreneurs and many social enterprises are underfunded and subsequently their self-sustainability and social impact are restricted.
It is important to look at creative funding solutions and social entrepreneurs are getting more resourceful in the way that they are going after funding.
